Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify dental hygiene college students¡¯ awareness and experience related to international dental hygienist education as well as the perceived needs related to this topic, and to subsequently use these data as a basis for internationalization of the curriculum.

Methods: This study included a total of 539 dental hygiene students. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 9 to May 3, 2016. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS 22.0.

Results: The results showed that the higher the awareness regarding the international education curriculum, the higher the perceived necessity of the standardization of a dental hygiene curriculum and of having an international exchange program.

Conclusions: It is necessary to establish a global vision of the dental hygienist profession and develop a competitive dental hygiene education curriculum that enables internationalization of the alumni as well as establish an international exchange program to enhance the global experience of students.
