Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify dental hygiene college students’ awareness and experience related to international dental hygienist education as well as the perceived needs related to this topic, and to subsequently use these data as a basis for internationalization of the curriculum.
Methods: This study included a total of 539 dental hygiene students. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 9 to May 3, 2016. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS 22.0.
Results: The results showed that the higher the awareness regarding the international education curriculum, the higher the perceived necessity of the standardization of a dental hygiene curriculum and of having an international exchange program.
Conclusions: It is necessary to establish a global vision of the dental hygienist profession and develop a competitive dental hygiene education curriculum that enables internationalization of the alumni as well as establish an international exchange program to enhance the global experience of students.
